A Simple Guide to Growing Your Money
Investing doesn’t have to be complicated. At its core, investing means putting your money to work with the goal of growing it or generating income over time.
Start With the Basics
Before investing, consider building an emergency fund and paying down high-interest debt. Then determine how much you can comfortably invest based on your goals, timeline, and risk tolerance.
TFSA: Flexible & Tax-Efficient
A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) can hold investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs—not just cash. Investment income and capital gains earned inside a TFSA are generally tax-free, and withdrawals are generally tax-free. Withdrawn amounts are added back to your contribution room in the following calendar year.
RRSP: Built for Retirement
A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is designed primarily for long-term retirement savings. Contributions may be deductible from your taxable income, subject to your available contribution room. Investments can grow tax-deferred while inside the RRSP, but withdrawals are generally taxable.
Which One Should You Choose?
It doesn’t have to be either-or.
A TFSA can be useful when you want flexibility and tax-free withdrawals, while an RRSP can be particularly valuable when you are in a higher tax bracket today and are saving for retirement.
Your income, age, goals, existing contribution room, and expected future tax rate can all influence which option—or combination—makes sense.
Diversification Matters
Whether you invest through a TFSA, RRSP, or another account, remember that the account is the container; the investments inside it are what carry the investment risk and potential return. Diversifying across investments can help manage risk.
Keep It Simple
Investing is about making informed decisions, staying consistent, and giving your money time to work.
Start with your goals. Understand your options. Invest with a plan.
